COUNCIL RING RENAMED IN HONOR OF TRUMAN BURNS

The Council Ring at Camp De Soto has officially been renamed the Truman L. Burns Council Ring. "Papa T", as Mr. Burns was affectionally called, was a longtime Scouter from Strong, Arkansas. His dedication to boys throughout the entire council was an inspiration to many. After his death, many former Scouts sent notes and memorials in his honor. It is only fitting that this area be named after a man who so embodied the purpose of Scouting. The official dedication ceremony took place during summer camp.

REMEMBERING PAPA "T" Next summer will mark the fourtieth anniversary for Camp De Soto. When we walk around all the buildings and other facilities on the property that so many of us call our second home, it is hard to believe that at one time, everything was forest land. Someone had to have the vision to design and build each aspect of the camp that we see today. Truman Burns was known to all as Papa "T" - the Scoutmaster of Troop 123 in Strong, Arkansas. He was a man dedicated to the ideals of Scouting and a good friend of John "Red" Berry, another Scouting icon in our council. He was one of the many adult Scouters instrumental in the creation of Camp De Soto. Soon after camp opened, he recognized the need for a more functional council ring. At that time, the area was just a dirt field that sloped into the water of the first lake. Along with the assistance of the members of the Order of the Arrow, he built up the area along the waterfront, leveled out the ground, and installed benches that stood for at least 25 years. In his later years, he was a constant fixture at Camp De Soto and a founding member of the Fossil Patrol (a group of individuals retired from their everyday jobs, but not from Scouting). On the last day of summer camp of 2007, he was posthumously recognized for his contributions to our council by renaming our council ring the "T. L. Burns Council Ring". Although Truman is no longer with us, the memory of his generosity lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. As long as there are men like him, there will always be a De Soto Area Council. -Bobby Olive
