The De Soto Area Council is sending two crews, totalling 24 participants, to Philmont in 2009. Terry Crook, Michael Hollis, Bryan Johnson and Braden Harman will serve as leaders.

A $50 per person, non-refundable deposit is due immediately to reserve a spot.  Youth participants must be at least 14 years of age by January 1, 2009, or completed 8th grade.

Boy Scouts can earn this new Centennial Recruiter patch by recruiting a boy into their troop this fall. Patches are available FREE OF CHARGE at the De Soto Area Council office. Scouts can invite a boy to join electronically by sending an e-card from http://www.thescoutzone.org. Simply click "Tell a Friend" and follow the simple instructions that follow.

NEW IRS REQUIREMENTS

As you may know, the IRS has introduced a new, abbreviated filing for small tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts of less than $25,000:  Form 990-N.  The BSA national office has consulted with the IRS and outside counsel about it.  In their opinion, most Scout units do not have to file the new form 990-N.

The only exception is for the very small number of units that have filed for separate, federal tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Those units must file either Form 990-N or the more detailed Form 990 or 990 EZ.

For questions, please contact the BSA's Finance Support Division at www.fsdinfo@netbsa.org.
